Screw the groundhogs and their shadows; at Urban Guide Québec we don’t look to rodents to tell us whether or not spring is coming, we look for signs of Chocolaterie de l’Île d’Orléans opening its doors for the spring/summer season!

An Île d’Orléans institution since 1988, Chocolaterie de l’Île d’Orléans is one of the most popular stops on the island in spring, summer and early autumn; and for good reason! Not only do they create handcrafted chocolates from raw cocoa imported from Belgium; they serve chocolate-dipped ice cream cones so deliciously delectable, that you’ll never buy a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone at McDonald’s or Dairy Queen again.

Yes, really!

At Chocolaterie de l’Île d’Orléans the word “preservatives” is more offensive than the f-word.

Imagine this… ice cream made in-house with 35% cream and milk, pressed through a soft-serve machine to fill a crunchy airy wafer cone, then dipped in chocolate that has been handcrafted from high-quality cocoa imported from Belgium.

Now imagine biting through the thick layer of handcrafted chocolate to the creamy cold ice cream in the centre and the foodgasm that occurs soon afterwards.

The white plastic cover over the cone is an essential part of the chocolate-dipped ice cream cone experience at Chocolaterie de l’Île d’Orléans, especially as the chocolate hardens around the ice cream.

Although, we don’t mind having yummy chocolate running down our fingers.

Our favourite choice is a vanilla soft serve ice cream cone with dark chocolate, but milk chocolate and maple are also delicious dipping options. Honestly, every choice is a good choice.

After you’ve slowly licked and lapped up the chocolate and ice cream, and crunched the cone into oblivion, be sure to pop into the chocolate shop to buy some truffles or chocolate bars for chocolates for the ride home.

Let us be honest, the chocolates will never make it all the way home!

[Note: The café at Chocolaterie de l’Île d’Orléans also sells yummy sandwiches if you’re looking for a light snack before indulging in a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone.]
